V-RAY Physical Camera - Global Settings

In this tutorial we will see the significance of the main parameters of the Physical Camera. The Physical Camera also works with Mental Ray.
First, we open the settings for Exposure Control that we find in the Rendering menu or with the "8" button on the keyboard.
As exposure mode, select Physical Exposure Control Room and, just below, To-Use Camera Exposure. This option ensures that each camera in the scene is independent of the other, in some cases this is an option very convenient.

I run a reference render with the values that you see in this picture.

The parameters that we will consider are: Focal Length, Aperture, Shutter, Exposure Gain (ISO), White Balance.
It is important to understand that these are parameters that have a match in the reality: in any real camera will find the ability to adjust these values.
This is the reference render adopting the previous image parameters.

FOCAL LENGHT

It represents the linear distance between the lenses composing the lens of the camera. If you increase this value, the picture changes appearance, magnifying the objects of the scene. The camera is stationary, it is only the value of Focal Lengh that by varying, changing the vision of the scene.
If I lower the value, the effect is that of moving away of the scene.
The value of the Focal Length that is close to human vision is between 45 and 50 mm.
Very low values of Focal Length distort the scene, just as they do in reality.

Render di riferimento eseguito con Focal Lenght = 40
Reference render run with Focal Length = 40

Focal Lenght = 20

Focal Lenght = 80

Decisa l'inquadratura, passiamo al valore Aperture.
Decided to shot, pass to Aperture value.

APERTURE

It is how opens the shutter at the time of the shooting. More open, more light enters and the scene lightens. The reference render has a value of Aperture = 20. Let the tests.

Aperture = 10

Aperture = 30

Aperture = 50

SHUTTER

Proviamo altri valori.
It represents the time in which the shutter is open. The 1 / seconds mode is perhaps the most popular among those available.
The reference render is performed with a value of 60, that is, the shutter will stay open 1/60 second. Since it is an inverse relationship, the more the value increases, the more time decreases (and therefore less light enters). Let's try the other values.

Shutter = 125

Shutter = 250

Shutter = 500

EXPOSURE

It represents the film speed (when used films). Plus the ISO number, the more the film is sensitive (and thus render gets lighter).
The reference render was done with ISO = 100.

Proviamo con ISO = 200.
Let ISO = 200.

ISO = 400.

WHITE BALANCE

This parameter tries to correct the dominant color of the image. simply tell the program under what lighting conditions are making the photograph - or render.
The reference render has been corrected with the Overcast option, which is a cloudy sky. The Overcast option corresponds to a color temperature of 6000 degrees Kelvin. Equivalent to enabling the temperature mode and set the temperature 6000.

Proviamo l'opzione Daylight (6500 K).
Try the option Daylight (6500 K).

Sunlight (5200 K).

Shade (7000 K).

V-RAY MATERIAL: MIRROR

Create a mirror material, with V-Ray, it's pretty simple.
The mirror that was modeled in the scene is composed of a wooden frame and glass surface. We then need two materials for a single object. The quickest solution is to use a Multi / Sub-Object Material.
-> If you do not know what it is you read this tutorial on the Multi / Sub-Object Material.
Then loaded a Multi / Sub-Object Material and set to 2 the materials you need with the Set Number button.

One of the materials will be used for the frame (not interest us here, it was placed a simple brown on the Diffuse channel of the Sub Material 1) .
The second material will be used for the mirrored surface.

MATERIALE SPECCHIO / MIRROR MATERIAL

Diffuse: nero / black
Reflect: RGB 230, 230, 230
Fresnel: NO

Render test

This type of materials they work fine on curved objects. Look at the spectacular effect on the ball.
With these settings you can also make a chromed metal.

--> Parquet with V-Ray
We create a simple glass with 3DS Max and V-Ray.
You have already read the previous tutorial?
-> V-Ray Material (characteristics)
-> Parquet with V-Ray
We load the empty slot a VRayMtl material.

VETRO TRASPARENTE / CLEAR GLASS

Reflect RGB 128, 128, 128
Attivate la riflessione Fresnel
Canale Refract RGB 230, 230, 230
How to color in the Diffuse channel put the black.
Reflect RGB 128, 128, 128
Activate the Fresnel reflection
Refract channel RGB 230, 230, 230

Render test

The shadow is wrong. To correct this error, we activate the Affect Shadows option.

Render test

Now the shade is right. Refraction is clearly visible in highlighted boxes.

VETRO COLORATO / COLORED GLASS

To obtain a colored glass must not act on the Diffuse channel but on the parameter Fog Color.
Also act on Fog Multiplier for metering the amount of color.

V-RAY MATERIALS: VRAYMTL

V-ray is not only an excellent render engine but a real suite of tools. Along with the render engine, the heart of the suite, there are two other families of objects related to the product of Chaos Group: lights and materials.
There are many V-Ray materials: in this post we talk about the main, the V-Ray Material.

Open the Material Editor and choose as type of material, just the Vray Material.
The material interfaces are never simple and, apparently, this is no exception.
Looking at the panel of the main property, however, we find that it is already divided into 3 main characteristics of each material: Diffuse, Reflection and Refraction.
It is sufficient to define these three characteristics already very well our material. If not then it is a transparent material, these features are limited to two: Diffuse and Reflection.

DIFFUSE

As you may know already, the Diffuse channel is used to determine the appearance (or color) of the material. No significant differences with other types of material: you can change the color by using the appropriate color picker, or load a texture by clicking on the adjacent button. The texture overrides the color; if you loaded a texture, this "cover" the color set in the color picker.

Consigli di utilizzo / Directions for use

If you use the Diffuse Color channel mode, be careful not to set oversaturated colors.

REFLECTION

Molti materiali, in natura, riflettono.
Many materials in nature, reflect. is well to specify that for reflection means not only that "perfect" of a mirror but also those less precise, such as those of a marble, of a polished wood, a ceramic, etc.

Reflect

Adjust the Reflection, in the V-Ray Materials, it is very simple: click on the color selector Reflect parameter and set the Value. The closer to white, plus the material reflects. The white color provides a mirror reflection while black is equivalent to disabling of all reflection.

Fresnel

The Fresnel parameter must be activated every time we are building a material with non-metallic reflections or mirror.

RGlossiness

Attenzione!
This parameter adjusts the sharpness of reflection. A value of 1 provides a crystal-clear reflection (mirror) while lower values make the blurred reflection. For values between 0 and 0.4 the render does not change much but times increase! Warning!

Consigli di utilizzo / Directions for use

Better to avoid the pure white of the Reflect channel.

REFRACTION

Refraction is the phenomenon whereby light rays passing through a transparent material are deflected from their original trajectory.
In essence, this channel is used to define the amount of transparency and refraction of our material.

Refract

It works exactly like the Reflect parameter of Reflection but here adjusts the value of transparency of the material. More the value of Value approaches to white, the more the material is transparent. The black color disables the transparency.

Glossiness

This parameter adjusts the sharpness of the refraction. A value of 1 provides razor sharp refractive index while lower values make the blurry refraction. For values less than 1 the render times increase progressively.

IOR

This acronym stands for Index of Refraction and is peculiar to the type of material that we are building. The higher this value is, the more objects appear distorted when viewed through the transparency. Each material has its own IOR; for glass the value is between 1.5 and 1.9. A network search easily provides values for each type of material.
